Pulmonary Function Testing

Welcome to Passa Multi-Specialty Institute! Here, we offer a comprehensive Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) designed to evaluate and support your lung health.

What is a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)?

A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) consists of several non-invasive assessments that measure how effectively your lungs are functioning. These tests help gauge the volume of air your lungs can hold, the rate at which air flows in and out, and how well oxygen is transferred into your blood. PFTs are vital for diagnosing and managing respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other lung-related issues.

Why Are PFTs Important?

PFTs play a crucial role in :

Diagnosing Respiratory Conditions :

Identifying conditions like asthma, COPD, and other restrictive lung diseases.

Tracking Disease Progression :

Monitoring changes in lung function over time to adjust treatment plans accordingly.

Assessing Treatment Effectiveness :

Evaluating how well current treatments are working and making necessary adjustments.

Pre-Surgical Evaluation :

Checking lung function before major surgeries to ensure safety.

Types of Pulmonary Function Tests :

Spirometry :

Measures how much and how quickly you can exhale air. It is commonly used to diagnose asthma and COPD.

Lung Volume Measurement :

Determines the total capacity of your lungs, useful for diagnosing restrictive lung diseases.

Diffusion Capacity Test :

Evaluates how well oxygen is transferred from the lungs to the bloodstream, which helps in diagnosing certain lung conditions.

Peak Flow Measurement :

Measures how fast you can exhale air, often used in managing asthma.

Results and Follow-Up :

You will receive a detailed report of the findings, and a follow-up appointment will be arranged to discuss the results and formulate a treatment plan.

Preparing for Your PFT

To ensure the best results, please:

Avoid Smoking :

Do not smoke for at least 24 hours before the test.

Consult About Medications :

Speak with your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, as some may need to be adjusted before the test.

Wear Comfortable Clothing :

Opt for loose-fitting clothing that does not restrict your breathing.

Avoid Large Meals :

Do not eat a heavy meal before the test, as it might affect the results.

What to Expect During the Test

During your PFT, you will be asked to breathe into a device known as a spirometer. The process may involve taking deep breaths, exhaling forcefully, or holding your breath briefly. The entire procedure is usually completed within about 30 minutes.

After the Test

You can resume your usual activities right after the test. Our specialists will review the results and provide a detailed report. We will arrange a follow-up appointment to discuss the findings and determine any further steps or treatments if needed.
